Will my Garmin work in Ireland

Will my Garmin work in Ireland?
I have a Garmin Nuvi, unfortunately I do not have it on me and do not know the model number exactly, but I just purchased it. Anyway it is for North America, as I am in Canada, but I will be travelling to Ireland soon and want to know if the gps will automatically work or not and if not, what must be done to make it work?

No it wont work. You will need to download an Ireland map onto it. I never downloaded it, so I'm not exactly sure where you would go to do this. Call the company and ask them. Hope this helped.

2 :
Nope, we've found that the Romanians cannot be trusted. Try the Netherlands, I hear anything goes there
3 :
Yeah, but only jobs that Irish don`t want to do - like lawn care, toilet cleaning, picking vegetables & fruits, writing bouncing checks all those 50 cents an hour jobs, and pushing some cannabis - on the side.
4 :
Romania and Ireland are both in the European Union. The EU freedom of movement rules state that any citizen of an EU country is allowed to live and work in any other EU country. Ireland may have a few restrictions of its own, but basically, they can't stop you working there.
5 :
You will need to apply for a work permit but apart from that you have a right as a citizen of an EU member state to move there & live there if you wish If you ring the Irish Embassy in Bucharest they should be able to confirm if you still need a work permit to work in the Republic of Ireland http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/employment/migrant-workers/employment-permits/work_permits Contact details for Irish Embassy http://www.embassyofireland.ro/home/index.aspx?id=34520

Will my iPhone work in Ireland

Will my iPhone work in Ireland?
I live in Colorado, USA and I'm going to Dublin, Ireland for a friends wedding this June. Will my iPhone with standard AT&T service work there. Is there any additional charges for using it there? Should I contact AT&T prior to my trip? What about chargers, do I need adapters for the plug ins? Thanks for your help.
Other - Ireland - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :

Your iPhone will work, but there will be additional charges for using it. Making calls and sending texts will cost more, and you will also be charged to receive calls, however I don't think you will be charged extra to receive texts. Contact AT&T to find out exactly what these charges will be. I always play it safe and use a payphone for making calls abroad, that way I know what I've paid and won't get any nasty surprises. You will need an adaptor as we have three pronged plugs here: http://z.about.com/d/gouk/1/0/Q/1/-/-/wall.jpg
2 :
I Should Be Doing Something Else's answer is fine, but in addition to an adaptor, you'll need a transformer, because in Ireland the electricity is different, and if you plug your phone in in Ireland without one, it will fry.

look at the transformer. if it says 110-240v or something similar you can use it. You'd need to buy a physical adaptor for the sockets, but not a voltage adaptor. Most phone and computer chargers these days can be used in different voltage areas.

You can't I'm afraid, there are no jobs in Ireland due to the recession, you may have heard about the fact we are in a recession here. Your question is posted on Y!A US so I'm assuming you are American. To move here you need a job offer and Irish/EU nationals are given preference for any job vacancy as a rule unless it is a very specialised role and the only suitable candidate is from outside the EU. I suggest you read your newspapers or Google "recession Ireland" or look through the hundreds of similar questions in the "Discover" section of Y!A. Tens of thousands of our college graduates have emigrated to Canada and Australia to find work as there are no jobs here and another 50,000 are due to leave this year. There are not likely to be any jobs for the foreseeable future. Companies are going bust every day and laying off workers.

social work ireland

social work ireland!?
I'm in 5th year in secondary school now and I have my heart set on being a social worker however as far as I know the only college course that allows you to be fully qualified is in trinity and is very hard to get into. I think you have to do two seperate courses apart from that but im not sure.does anybody know what you basically have to do after your leaving cert to become a social worker if you dont have enough points for trinity?my careers teacher doesnt describe it very well!thanks for your help!x

If you dont get the points to do it as an undergrad in trinity then you can do it as a post grad. There are two ways to do this. 1) Do any degree (any 3 or 4 year degree) THEN do a Higher Diploma In Social Policy which can be done at UCD or UCC (1 year) http://www.ucd.ie/appsocsc/postgraduate/hdip_socpol.htm http://www.ucc.ie/en/CKA02/ THEN You do your masters of social work at UCC or UCD (2 years) or 2) Do a Social Science degree (as opposed to doing any old degree as in option 1). THEN Do the masters in UCC or UCD after (you get to leave out the Higher Diploma In Social Policy from option 1 if you have a dgree in social science)

I don't think you would be able to get a work permit, to be honest with you. Customer Service does not generally require any qualifications or a hard to find skillset, therefore there would be no need for the employer to look to non-EU candidates to fill the vacancy, not when there are so many unemployed Irish people who need the job.
2 :
If you have a job offer, which I think you have, then you should take that letter to your nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate and give them a copy and say that you would like the necessary document as you have a chance to apply for a job. Normally how it works for non-EU nationals is that you get the job offer in writing, then contact the Irish (or other EU country's) government for the work permit.

There are job vacancies in Ireland? Please tell me where because my partner is going to be laid off next week. This website give you information about work permits http://www.globalvisas.com/ireland/ireland_work_permit.html I can't imagine an employer would have to prove that the position could not be filled by a "local" but I'll stand corrected if I'm wrong. I would hope they could hire the most suitable person for the job be that an Irish person, EU national or an non-EU national as long as their permit/visa allowed them to work in Ireland.
2 :
Maybe you should find work first and then get the permit! There's nothing but lay offs in Ireland at the moment
3 :
You have to find an employer registered in Ireland who is willing to employ you. Once you have the letter offering you the position, you can apply for your necessary documents. However, this is still no guarantee that you will get the permit. Oh yeah, you also have to be outside of Ireland when making your applications.

the only way you can do that is if the N95 is unlocked, then you can use whatever sim card you have.

In UAE all the mobile phones are unlocked. The phones in UAE use a 900/ 1800 / 1900 frequency, but I believe the N95 is Quadband ( Bought mine on April 4 in UAE, before the release, but sold it). Just check the frequency in Ireland and match it with the phones frequency. Contact your local phone dealer for more information (Axiom Telecom, Cellucom, etc.)

I think not. You need to pass certain exams like CAT(Certified Acctg. Technician), CB (certified bookkeeper) and the like. It actually depends on what your specialization is like taxation, payroll, auditing etc. But if you like not to take the exams it's fine. You may still go and work there but with a limited scope only.

2 :
Actually no. You would have to take the appropriate exams in the UK because the Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK. The UK consists of England, Scotland and Wales (Britain) plus Northern Ireland (only). Two countries exist on the Island of Ireland: Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland.
3 :
An accredited psychology degree from an Irish University allows for accreditation with the British Psychological Society. When it comes to post graduate qualifications you have to take a more course by course basis. So yes, you can obtain work in the UK.

well the recession hit us pretty hard, and 1000 people lose their job every day, so you probably wouldn't find a job easily

work is very hard to get in ireland at the moment i suppose like everywhere else around the world
3 :
You can work at anything you like in Ireland, as long as there is demand for your skills. Right now I'm not sure about nursing, but I do think that there will be a demand for science graduates again, as we're not producing enough of those ourselves. Oh, and by the way, Irish employers are far more like to employ EU nationals, the paperwork is a lot less expensive. So if you have any way of getting citizenship of an EU country, it will be much easier for you.
4 :
Shure come over if you are in the form. Otherwise stay at home. Do lots of reseach and ask questions here if needs be. Maybe use the yahoo answers search engine too
5 :
have you been studying in Ireland? If so and your student visa is vstill valid you can work up to 20 hours. you need to give more information! You americans can go on a bit when answering simple question face to face but you sure are no good at asking questions!
6 :
There are a lot of Irish who want to work in Ireland as well so you may have to get to the back of the queue...which at the moment is quite long! As you are not a citizen of the EU, you would have the same problems getting work in Ireland as you would anywhere else in Europe. You need to have a skill that is in short supply over here, and you will also need a work permit. Either that or have a shed load of money to invest/start your own business, or find someone who is willing to sponsor you.

A pass port would do the same thing. But don't be stupid. Going to Ireland for the boyfriend is radical and senseless. Unless of course you have nothing better to do here.
3 :
visit the websites below, you might be able to get a temporary visa then when you get there go talk to the officials, i had a friend who just moved there and worked without a visa, of course your job choices will be limited..' And a passport is not the same thing....
4 :
It's really difficult for non-EU citizens to work in Ireland. One fast-track way could be to get married (assuming your boyfriend is an Irish citizen or has legal status). Check with an Irish lawyer. Or if you enroll as a student you're allowed to work a certain number of hours. But student fees for non-EU citizens are horrendous, so it mightn't be worth it.

You can just buy one from O2, I think they cover ierland, you will need to find a carrier with the same technology even if its unlocked if the tech isn't the same it won't work. iphone sucks. It doesn’t have anything. Its all hype. It can't text pictures, it can't record video, it had connection issues, no mobileTV, no ATT services, most apps are pointless and dumb, no external memory so your stuck with your limit, too itunes centric, low speakerphone, no â€Å“true” Bluetooth (just apple headsets.), its accelerometer is slow, no flash for its web browser so your stuck with just youtube for videos, and the camera doesn’t have any features or flash. No zoom, no color effects, no frames, no brightness settings, no built in FM radio, too many people have it, it ends up costing more in plans, it doesn’t have a slot for cell phone key chains, it is really hard to text on the digital QWERTY keyboard, no TTY support, kinda dull and simple looking. It’s no good SOO overrated. Much better phones out there.

you're going to need a visa. and you're going to need to be the age of what the other nation considers to be that of a legal "adult" now, last thing...why the hell would you wanna work in ireland? i hear their job market's in the crapper.
3 :
If you hold a British passport you do not need a visa to live and work in Ireland. Your and EU citizen. You won't get a job in Ireland at age 16 under the Irish labour laws.Employers must see a copy of the young person's birth certificate or other evidence of his or her age before employing that person. If the young person is under 16, the employer must get the written permission of the person's parent or guardian.Employers must keep records for every employee aged under 18 including details of the employee̢۪s starting and finishing times for work.
4 :
Yes, since you have the additional European citizenship which grants you the right to freely travel to, reside, and work in every country of the European Union you would not need a visa to live and work in Ireland. You just must register with the local authorities if you stay longer than 90 days and get a residence card. Whether you will need parental consent for moving to Ireland depends on the Country you are living in. Scottish people would not need it since they have reached the age of majority at 16 years. Being English or Welsh you would need parental approval. From an age of 16 years you may work 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week; there some restrictions on start and end time as well as for breaks based on the youth protection law. It also works the other way round since Irish citizens have the same European rights. Yes you can! As a member of the EU you are free to work, live and study within any EU member state. You will however need to contact Irish Social Services and set up an RSI number for yourself. This works like a tax file number and allows the country to keep track of your medical, education and work record.

Will a Korg Kaoss Pad bought in America work in Ireland

Will a Korg Kaoss Pad bought in America work in Ireland?
I was going to buy one off ebay but just wanted to know if it would work here in Ireland. I heard electronics items dont because of different voltage or something

Yeh should do, just make sure u buy a power adaptor for the one that comes with it, and if that doeesnt work, buy a power cable (but make sure its the right size + voltage)
2 :
It'll work but you'll need to buy a new plug for it (the American plug will operate at a lower voltage)...they're pretty standard though, cost about a tenner in Maplin. Brought a Kaoss back from the states last year...great piece of kit.

How would it work, if i want to go to college in America, but then move to Ireland and work

How would it work, if i want to go to college in America, but then move to Ireland and work?
So i want to complete college in America (I was going to go to ireland, but international students pay a HELL of a lot more..) and then move to ireland. I will be studying tobecome a Pediatric Nurse, and was just wondering like, are the educational degree requirements different to become a nurse there, than the requirements for nurses in America? ANY info on the subject mater would be greatly appreciated!!!

I don't see any problem with your plans. Many students come from all over the world to receive their education here in America. You are just doing it the other way around. I'm (almost certain) that any degree you receive in an accredited college here, will be accepted there(or anywhere).
2 :
I THINK YOU NEED A BS. YOU MAY WELL LEARN THAT THE PAY WILL BE LOWER THERE. A PERSON I KNOW WITH APPROXIMATELY 20 YEARS TEACHING EXPERIENCE, MOVED TO GB. SHE CHOSE NOT TO TEACH AS THE PAY WAS SO LOW. NOT AS MUCH AS A STORE CLERK.
3 :
The above answerer has no IDEA what they are talking about. First of all, Ireland is not in Great Britain (duh). Second, salaries in Ireland and actually great in medicine and teaching, you just have to make sure you go over there legally. The very good news is that they REALLY need medical professionals (mainly because all of the recent immigration from Eastern Europe), so you're in excellent shape there. Here is a copy of an email that was sent to me by someone at the fas (the government agency that controls career development in Ireland): "I would recommend that you log onto www.fas.ie and access the Jobs Ireland section which has a facility which allows Jobseekers to upload their CV's. You will also be able to review the range of job opportunities available through FAS. Other useful careers websites are www.recruitireland.com, and www.loadzajobs.ie The Irish Times, Irish Examiner and Irish Independent newspapers, each produce a weekly supplement on Job Opportunities - their respective website addresses are www.ireland.com; www.unison.ie and www.examiner.ie. As you are probably aware US citizens require a work permit to work in Ireland, full details in relation to this area are available on www.entemp.ie under the work permits section, and I would also recommend that you access information on living and working in Ireland under the consular services section on www.ireland.emb.org." Because you're looking into pediatric nursing, all requirements and other info can be found at http://www.nursingboard.ie. Good luck!

I work in kilkeel, Northern Ireland. Still plenty of work building airplane seats! The local building trade however has hit the wall, brick layers are the worst hit at the moment. My friend is an electrician and has plenty of work at the moment but if the brickies aren't building the houses then the rest of the trades will also take a dive.

How would I go about applying for a work visa in Ireland

How would I go about applying for a work visa in Ireland?
I am thinking of moving to Ireland in the mid spring I am needing to know where the most reasonable place is to live or maybe find some one to share the bills with after finding work.

It would help to know where you are from, as different nationalities have to apply for different visa. If you are an EU citizen, you do not need a visa at all. If you are Australian and under 30, there is a special 1-year visa you can get. If you are American you will have to be eligible under Ireland's 'in-demand occupations' list. See: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/employment/migrant-workers/employment-permits/green_card_permits/ If you are qualified in one of these areas, you can apply for a green card on your own behalf. Employers can apply for a work permit for positions they have been unable to fill from the national labour force. They must first offer these positions to workers from the EEA & Switzerland, then to workers in Bulgaria and Romania, and only if they have not filled the position at that point can they apply for a permit for workers outside these regions: http://www.entemp.ie/publications/labour/2007/guideworkpermits.pdf The list of occupations changes frequently, you should contact your local embassy for an up to date information pack. Alternatively, if you have an Irish parent or grandparent, you can apply for an Irish passport which will entitle you to live and work here for as long as you like. Accommodation is expensive everywhere, but Dublin is most expensive. Small country towns can be cheap, but may not have a lot of employment. Go to the town where you get work, as the economy is in recession and jobs are getting scarcer. You can find accommodation/people to share with here: http://www.daft.ie For jobs, go to: http://www.irishjobs.ie

What are the best cities in Ireland for someone to work or study in

What are the best cities in Ireland for someone to work or study in?
I'm in the beginning stages of looking into working/studying in Ireland. I have no restriction of where and what field I can work/study in. I'm not into major cities like Dublin with lots of nightclubs but I like hanging out in pubs and more low key places. I would love to be by the ocean and country side but not necessarily in the middle of nowhere either. I want to experience true Irish culture. Thanks!

Dublin
3 :
Galway, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Kilkenny. Ireland doesn't really do cities, it's quite a rural place.
4 :
I visited Ireland last summer, It was amazing! We got to travel many places for Two weeks, and out of ALL of the places we went Killarney was my absolute favorite. Dublin, is much too modernized. Galway, though most Locals think it is the "best place in Ireland", I really did not enjoy it. Killarney made me think, "This is truly Ireland." It sounds like it would be perfect for you.
5 :
It sounds to me like you want Galway. It is beside the sea, has great pubs (niteclubs also if you change your mind), is Ireland's most vibrant cultural centre, is near some spectacular scenery in Connemara, Connemara is home to Ireland's strongest Gaeltacht where Irish can still be heard spoken (sometimes). The university has a very good name in Ireland. Its main strengths are the humanities, Irish language, science and IT. Not so strong in business or engineering as I understand it. You can find out what it is like to live in Galway (city and county) at http://www.likeplace.ie/state.php?state=Galway&Submit=Show+places An alternative is Derry city or Waterford. But Galway is the obvious choice.

What Capture Cards Work In Ireland

What Capture Cards Work In Ireland ?
Hello, I have wanted to get a capture card for a long time but I was wondering do they all work in Ireland or what ones do ? Also can you buy them in the shops or just online ? Thanks.

For use in Ireland any card should work as long as it's able to interpret PAL60 input (if that is the television encoding system you will be using to view your videos). I added a list of cards and Internet retailers that sell the cards for both PAL and NTSC.

Try aldi and lidle I heard there hireing at the moment. The pays not bad either, think its 13 euro an hour. I know its not construction, but you do what you have to do. and it's not permanent its just until things pick up.
2 :
Oooh that is a hard question! I'd say your best bet is to listen to job listings in your local paper and the job announcements on your local radio and just take whatever you can. Construction isn't doing too well at all so theres lots of people wh are trained in that area working in shops at the moment. Good luck!

I was in the "Steps of Rome" the otherday, the pizza place off Grafton St. and they had a sign up looking for staff; feel like trying your hand at the culinary industry?

Right now the Job Market In Ireland Is Really Hurting. You Probably Will Not Be Able To Find Work, Unless You Already Have A Work Permit. If you are coming from the US, they will not give you a work permit. If you have enough funds to support your self for 6months, the Government will let you stay for that period of time. It might take a few years until the job market turns around. Good Luck!
2 :
That's a question quite a lot of native Irish are asking at the moment also. My advice would be to stay away for another year or so, and then see what the situation is.
3 :
Please don't come...you'll only end up going back home. A lot of Ireland is unemployed...we have plenty of carpenters, just not enough work. The job market is really bad right now, and every day you hear about more cuts. It's very depressing, you'd be safer somewhere else.
4 :
From what I can see, you are from the USA, so unfortunately there would be no way you could get a visa if your profession was as a carpenter. I remember a question only a couple of days ago from an Irish fella who was a carpenter saying that he had ben out of work for a year. You would need to take some time to have a long think about what you want from your future career and living arrangements, because I can see from your Q&A that you recently wanted to live in Britain and work as an actor. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Can I use a british passport to work in Ireland

Can I use a british passport to work in Ireland?
OK..I was born in Canada and hold a Candian passport. My parents were actually both born in England. If I apply for a british/UK passport can I move to the Republic of Ireland and work and live as long as I want? I read somewhere that because they are all part of the EU that anyone with an EU passport can work anywhere within the EU countries. Does that count if I get a UK passport and want to live in Ireland? I've actually read up on it and the UK is actually seen as an EU country. I am actually free to work anywhere within the EU with a british passport.

Unless you are working in Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, I would bet the answer is no. The best thing to do is to contact the Irish Consulate.

its like any other country, prices can range from very expensiv up to cheap. If you wan live cheaply, try hostels ( http://www.hostelbooker.com ) Ireland in general is quite expensive, but there are ways to live cheaply, not eating out in restaurants, and instead buying food in tesco, lidl, or aldi. as regards bar work, its easy enough to gain a job in a bar as long as u have experience an a good comand of english. Over here, bars are very much social places where ppl will come in and spend the day talking to the bar men/women, so being chatty and easy to talk to is a plus also.
